SERIES PROPOSAL

Tentative name: Precious

Idea: For this series, I will take photos of my son in his own environment.

Idea execution: The lighting I will be using is natural light or whatever light source available because my focus is environmental and simple portraits.

Why is it important to me?

Capturing his moments has always been my most favorite thing to do since the moment he was born. I have been taking thousands of pictures of him almost every day although sometimes activities repeat, I still want to see the changes in him each day. Moreover, he will soon be growing to the age that childish naivety, cute and silly moments gradually cease to exist. So, I have to take advantage to capture and hold on to those moments as long as I can before they disappear. Most importantly, I can pass down to my son’s kids so that they can learn about how their father’s childhood life was like and feel grateful for what they have while their father did not have.

What do I want people to understand?

Hopefully I can deploy some techniques, if not all, and whatever I’ve learned from this class to create a successful and beautiful series. I want people to understand and see through my series that wonderful moments of your most beloved ones cannot be bought. In my opinion, money could always be re-earned if you lost it, but once memory gone, it could never be found again.

Any special conditions, equipment, or techniques needed?

I think I just need tripod and probably rent a better lens to capture more quality photos if it’s affordable. The techniques are probably all what I learned so far and maybe do more of the spanning because my son loves movement activities. I will have to refine my skills in night photo and life painting so that my selection can be more in wider range.

Output methods and size: I will probably make a photo book with a special material similar to canvas and the size is probably half of 8.5×11 because it’s really pricey.

4 sample sketches: I will attach the 4 sketches along with this paper.

Final Project Series Proposal

Tentative Series Name: Bodies

State Idea: For this series I want to focus on human anatomy.

How will you execute idea? I plan to take abstract portraits of strong and muscular people in unique poses using a studio setting. I will incorporate a hard and direct light source to emphasize the highlights and shadows. I want to show give significance to the anatomy of the human figure and each muscle group.

Why is this topic important to you? What do you want other people to understand? What do you hope this series will accomplish? I’ve seen the great lengths of human anatomy and how athletes for example can push the boundaries by increasing muscle mass. I want to showcase some of my teammates on the Cal Poly Pomona track team and reveal the hard work, dedication, and their craft that they put into their body.

Any special conditions, equipment, or techniques needed?

No I don’t really need anything except sunlight.

Output Method and Size: I plan to print 11×17 size. I want to size of the photos to be pretty big to show the details in the anatomy.

Project 5 Proposal

Project 5 Proposal

Tentative Series Name:

Healing

State Idea:

For this series I want to document the scars of my friends and family.

How will you execute idea?

I plan to take portraits, and close up shots of people and their scars. I will use a low aperture to have close up detail and blurred background. I want to shoot in natural light if possible, and the primary focus being the scars. I will also ask them to write a brief description of how they got the scars that they are willing to share..

Why is this topic important to you? What do you want other people to understand? What do you hope this series will accomplish?

I want scars to have a less negative connotation around them. I feel like everyone has at least one and they are all unique and have different stories revolving around them. Most are probably stories of clumsiness but others may be more serious. I want to people to understand that scars are normal and shouldn’t be seen as a bad thing. I hope this series will let people feel more comfortable in their skin and feel stronger knowing they’ve healed from something that once brought them harm.

Any special conditions, equipment, or techniques needed?

I may need some sort of spotlight or flashlight to highlight the scars more so that they pop out.

Output Method and Size:

For the series I plan on using traditional prints sized 8×12. I want the images to be large enough to clearly see the scars.

Project 5 Proposal

Tentative Series Name:

The Hidden World Underneath Our Feet

The Hidden Microcosm/Macrocosm

Idea:

For the series I want to focus primarily on macro insect photography

How will you execute the idea?

Since the idea revolves around insects the idea would be more of a series of portraits of different insects. I will go to different locations like hiking trails, botanical gardens, etc.. to see what I can find and see what kind of insect I can find.

Why is this topic important to you? What do you want other people to understand? What do you hope this series will accomplish?

This topic is important to me because I’ve always had an affinity for small organisms like insects and I think it is important to slow down and take a good long look around and be able to take it all in instead of always being busy with everyday life. I would like people to understand the importance of even the smallest organism that we share this planet with. I hope that this series will open up the idea of taking a closer look at the world instead of passively living in it.

Any special conditions, equipment, or techniques needed?

To be able to execute this idea I will have to research methods of how to be able to take these close of macro shots of insects. Also research some materials that may be required to make it possible as well.

Output Method and Size:

I am thinking of making a photo album setting where I would put simple information like date and location next to each photo and have the photos in an 8×10 or 8.5×11 size.

Second Idea:

Tentative Series Name:

Running Man

Friendly Competition

Idea:

For the series I want to focus on telling a story of friendly competition between friends.

(A little history of where I grew up with my friend)

How will you execute the idea?

I will achieve this by going to locations where I have grown up with my friend and when we are on location we will race each other to the timer of the camera (setting up a 30s timer) and see who ends up going a longer distance within that time.

Why is this topic important to you? What do you want other people to understand? What do you hope this series will accomplish?

This topic stemmed off of the idea of the importance of friends and the inevitable competitions that they get into. This is important because I believe friendly competition is a good drive to be able to reach one’s goals. With this I want people to have an idea of where I grew up and the importance of my friends along the way. I hope this will get people to appreciate the friendships they have, especially long term friendships that they may still have.

Any special conditions, equipment, or techniques needed?

A special condition would be framing the photo to make an interesting composition and give enough information about the location. Equipment will be a tripod and a tool to figure out the distance we will have ran.

Output Method and Size:

I am thinking of just making a series of pictures with information under it about who is in the photo, the distance ran, and some information about the location. The series may be put in a booklet where the picture will be on one page and on the opposite the information. Size wise I was thinking 8.5×11 or possibly smaller.

Series Proposal

Tentative Series Name:
Nostalgic Markets

State Idea:
For this series I want to focus on capturing the ambiance and contents of Asian supermarkets.

How will you execute the idea?
I plan to mainly focus on still life photography of the various items on shelves, as well as the walls, floors, and ceilings of Asian supermarkets. I also plan to shoot some environmental portraits of the employees or perhaps some shoppers looking for items but in a street photography style where they are unaware and just going on with their daily tasks.

Why is this topic important to you? What do you want other people to understand? What do you hope this series will accomplish?
I want to focus on this topic because Asian supermarkets were and still are places that I am fond of, mainly because of the kinds of foods that they have which remind me of my childhood and culture. I also think it would be interesting to capture something at an exact moment in that setting because the subject and I are there at the same time in a specific composition.
I want other people to understand that these Asian supermarkets serve so many customers of similar backgrounds and whose paths may never cross again.
I hope this series will encourage viewers to look at the mundane, such as a supermarket, and think about how that one thing can shape and influence a person’s life.

Any special conditions, equipment, or techniques needed?
I plan for these images to be fairly straightforward.

Output method and size:
I plan on using traditional prints on 8.5 x 11 luster photo paper.

Series Proposal

Tentative Series Name: Bon Voyage or Boa Viagem

State Idea: For this project I want to create a series of creative, funny and unique passport photos.

How will you execute idea? I plan on shooting a combination of formal and creative photos of different people. These photos will have the same size and aspect as a passport photo in a plain background but I plan to give more creativity with the lighting, people’s expression and makeup.

Why is this topic important to you? What do you want other people to understand? What do you hope this series will accomplish? This series is important to me because I travel a lot since I’m an international student so I always have to deal with passport pictures and they are always serious and boring. The whole process of entering in a country, specially the United States, is always stressful to me, so with this series I want to make this bureaucracy part more creative, and remember people that travelling can be fun.

Any special conditions, equipment, or techniques needed? I plan on shooting different people, so I would need about 10 models. And I would like to explore different types of creative lighting.

Output Method and Size: I plan the prints to be the size of actual passport photos or maybe a bigger size so it adds to the theme of changing the pattern of typical passport photos. It would also be fun to create an actual passport to showcase and present the photos.

Project 5 Proposal

Tentative Series Name(s):

here,

Idea:

For this series, I want to showcase where I’m from and the environment, and people I’m surrounded with and where I feel comfortable.

Execution:

I plan to photograph the places and people that make me feel at home and present. I want the series to include portraits and landscapes of my environment.

Why is this topic important to you?

This topic is important to me because I don’t get to spend as much time with the people I love as I’d like, so essentially this is an excuse to be around them and engage in the spaces around me.

Any special conditions, equipment, or techniques needed?

Im going to use a tripod to take a panoramic shot of the plateaus by my house and make a bounce card for some portraits if I need it.

Output Method and Size:

I want to do a smaller zine fro this project that has some fold out pages.

Series proposal: Head in the Clouds

Project #5:  Series — Proposal

Series Name:

Head in the Clouds

Idea/Topic:

For this series, I plan to take pictures of the sky and clouds from different points of the day, ranging from sunrise, midday, sunset, and even rainclouds.

How do I plan to execute this idea/topic?

I plan to use environmental portraits of the sky and clouds, primarily using natural lighting.  I hope it consist of medium and wide-shot images.

Why is this idea/topic important to you? Why do you want other people to understand? What do you hope this series will accomplish?

I chose to take pictures of the sky and the clouds because I feel clouds at different times of the day convey different emotions.  Right now, most people are too busy to glance at the sky and clouds, so I am hoping with this series, they will stop and take time to look up and marvel at the sky and clouds.  I find looking at the sky and clouds therapeutic, so I am hoping some other person would benefit from this too, because I believe it is important to express your emotions instead of keeping them bottled up.

Any special conditions, equipment or techniques needed?

I plan to keep this series fairly straightforward and just take pictures of the sky and clouds from dawn to dusk.

Output method and size:

For this series, I plan to print in either 12×12 or 16×20.

Sunrise
Midday/Afternoon

Series Proposal

Tentative Series Name:

Breakfast of Champions

Idea:

I want to show the interaction between college students and the food/ meals they eat in the name of staying up to finish projects or waking up early to get to class.

Execution:

I am imagining this series as a split between humorous portraits and food photography. But the food is all constructed and intentionally ridiculous (using Red Bull in your cereal instead of milk).

Why this topic is important to me:

Humor is a really important element to art and design for me. I want to play into the phrase of “breakfast of champions” usually being used sarcastically when you eat bad food. I tend to hear that a lot from my dad when I’ve been up all night working on projects. I am hoping that seeing these photos will make people laugh, or at least smile.

Special considerations:

I do not think I will need any special equipment to create this series. Likely I will just have to put a lot of time into creating food subjects that look convincing.

Output Method and Size:

The main part of this series will be the output. I want to construct full-size cereal boxes and layout the photos on them to look like real products. There will be one photo on the front and back of each box resulting in four cereal boxes in the series.

Sketches:

Here are rough sketches of what I am thinking.
